Things are happening in the land of Don Quixote. For years the region suffered from the reputation of producing mass rather than class, but recent developments show that the region's viticulture has taken a decisive step in the right direction. As part of its continuous drive to improve wine quality, the Control Council introduced a new classification and quality level for wines in the top segment in April 2020.
The previous levels Joven, Tradicional, Envejecido en Barrica, Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva are now joined by a new designation: La Mancha Excellent. The wines are subject to strict quality controls and traceability requirements that go beyond the usual DOP regulations. David Schwarzwälder gives an outlook on the development of the last years as well as the current and future potential of the DOP La Mancha, which still offers an unbeatable price-performance ratio.

Spain expert David Schwarzwälder is on a first-name basis with most Spanish winemakers. He has written the standard work "Spain and its wines" and is a freelance journalist for numerous wine media. He shares his knowledge as a lecturer at the German Wine and Sommelier School, the University of Applied Sciences Geisenheim and numerous hotel management schools. David Schwarzwälder lives and works in Salamanca, Spain and Alsace, France.
